WGC: Gold Investment ‘Robust’ In Second Quarter; Volatility Below Average

14 July 2011, 8:00 a.m.
By Kitco News

"Elsewhere, physical gold delivery at the Shanghai Gold Exchange was 205.3 metric tons between April and June, a gain of 26.1 tons from the same period last year. “This represented a 14.6% increase in year-on-year tonnage, a strong performance especially considering that Q2 is not the traditional peak season for buying in China,” the WGC said.

The report described “healthy” gold demand in Hong Kong due to a large selection of bars and coins, more vendor confidence and lower taxes that attract buyers from other Asian nations. Reports out of India suggested coin stocks were running out during the Akshaya Tritiya holiday period. The WGC also cited increasing purchases of coins and bars by European investors, but noted that the U.S. Mint reported lower sales in the second quarter than the first."
