To All:

Yesterday, an article appeared in the Swedish Business Paper Dagens Industry describing a situation which could have serious consequenses for Ericsson. The article is entitled: Ramqvist Risks Losing Face. Unfortunately, it is not translated into English but I will try to give the gist of it.

The title refers to the possibility that the European Tele-Standardization Institute (ETSI) will elect not to choose the standard championed by Ericsson, W-CDMA, and also chosen by the Japanese operator NTT. Ericsson would then lose face to the Japanese and could lose future Japanese contracts which could carry over to the rest of Asia.

The competing standard, TDMA/CDMA is backed by a group including Siemens, Alcatel, Nortel, Italtel, Motorola and Bosch. W-CDMA is backed by Ericsson and Nokia. The 500 member ETSI will vote to determine which of the two standards will be used in Europe the week before Christmas.
