Nasdaq jumps nearly two pct on tech-stock rally Reuters Story - November 17, 1997 16:20 %TEL %PUB %US %ELI %ENT %DPR %BUS %HOT %STX %.O COMS INTC WCOM DELL V%REUTER P%RTR NEW YORK, Nov 17 (Reuters) - The Nasdaq Composite Index jumped almost two percent Monday as technology stocks rallied on optimism Asia's economic woes might be coming under control, traders said. The Nasdaq Composite Index unofficially rose 30.75 points -- or 1.94 percent -- to close at 1614.26 Monday. News Monday that Japan's 10th-largest bank declared bankruptcy ironically sparked a rally in Asian stocks, as investors concluded authorities were taking active steps to help ailing Japanese banks. Most overseas markets rose, as did U.S. shares, led by technology issues. Analysts said tech issues now looked particularly attractive after their October battering. "People have been picking on the tech stocks lately, so mainly the techs were the big winners," one trader said. Among the most actives, 3Com Corp gained 3-13/16 to 34-1/8, Intel Corp rose 1-11/16 to 80-7/16 and WorldCom Inc added 1-5/16 to 31-3/16. Dell Computer Corp gained 5-1/2 to 84-5/8. The annual Comdex trading show in Las Vegas, Nevada also added to the electric atmosphere around tech stocks, analysts said.
