Even gold was actual money, not many people had gold. Silver was more common as coins. Or copper coins.

Here is how mob mentality could arrive, with pitchforks. The public cry could go up "Repudiate the loans, introduce a gold standard". That would be gold mob mentality even while few own actual gold.

i know some folks who have gold

even though they have enough, as in more than fair global share, but can use more, because all excess savings and surplus capital belongs in allocation to the metals

for what environment we are heading into

it shall be a most interesting journey

especially for history buffs

I suspect the statistics are somewhat understated.
