God/s mercy is only available to human beings who recognize and acknowledge that His just wrath against sin has been propitiated/satisfied by the death of Jesus, the Christ, and who by faith alone, throw themselves on His mercy and grace. Chesterton was brilliant, but wrong about the innocence of children. They are certainly innocent compared to you and I but that's not saying much. Compared to God they are fallen and sinful. They just haven't had the opportunity to express their natural state and inherent rebellion to wards God yet.
