The difference is that a non-dividend paying company can still have earnings and create economic value, while those metals can't. I own slices of lots of companies that pay no dividend.

Holding gold or silver is not an investment -- on this thread. It can't be, if this is a Graham-type thread because the holding of these metals (bullion, coins, jewelry) doesn't "provide safety of principal and an adequate return".

Holding common stocks of gold or silver mining companies, now that might be different.
