Goldman Sachs axes 1,000 jobs on market gloom warning

Goldman Sachs is preparing to axe 1,000 staff after warning that the financial markets are likely to remain in turmoil for the ‘foreseeable future’.

The giant Wall Street bank is aiming to cut £630m from its overheads after the escalating eurozone crisis and concerns over the US budget deficit hit trading.

Revenues at Goldman’s bond, currencies and commodity trading division – historically its main profit engine – plunged by 63 per cent between April and June as investors ran for cover.
