Bill-

>Mass rollout is one of those lovely terms that really doesn't mean much. Would you like to define a quantity? The BA contract is for 4 years, do you think mass deployments will occur before 2002 in the BA region? The GTE CLEC division is for a multi-year contact. More than one year less than 1,000,000 years.<

My own personal definition of a mass rollout is a tariffed offering with wide-scale availability in a major metropolitan area. I think mass deployments will occur in BA before 2002. What I hope you can grasp is that WSTL is not by definition the winner--unless they are deployed. A RBOC can change its mind anytime for better equipment from another vendor. From my contacts, lets just say DSC and WSTL are not best friends. I also would think BA would require WSTL to conduct interoperability testing among other vendor ATU-R units. Additionally, GTE CLEC is not GTE ILEC. My bets are on the ILEC for mass deployment. Not the CLEC at $125 a pop and all the associated baggage that comes with being a CLEC.

>CAP interoperability doesn't include the networking layer<

Sadly, neither does the functionality of the current WSTL ATU-R/C. If you look at the advantages of ADSL modems versus cable modems, one thing that leaps to mind is multiple user destinations and multiple PCs in the house. How do you map authentication streams to the proper interface using PPP dial-up structure when the box is a bridge, not a router? Does not scale well at all. WSTL desperately needs some talent acquisition in this area.
