Peter: I've promised myself that I wouldn't place messages on SI more than once or twice a week since its such a time sink. However, I wanted to write to you directly about my revelation on the Ligand thread.

Yes, my father has PD. I really apologize that you had to here about in such a backdoor way. You have been such a help and friend I'm ashamed that you were unaware this was one of my primary motivations of my being here. My dad is nominally asymtomatic at present but the diagnosis is quite certain.

This may sound disingenuous but I didn't tell you about all this because I would have been just as content learning about the mechanisms of neurodegeneration and leaving the family stuff out of the equation. I hope you understand.

I clearly remember those two posts you made on the Bash thread: as far as I can tell, they remain some of the few posts discussing the actual underlying biology of AD and PD. I was and am aware they're incomplete; your point that simplistic pharmacolgical solutions to poorly understood phenomena was appreciated.

I briefly scanned the responses I've received from the Ligand thread and I noticed something peculiar: all of the respondents accepted the premise that SI was a good place to be and recommended the threads of particular companies. You, who may be the best informed regarding the etiology of these diseases, questioned the premise and sent me to the books, seminars, etc.....

Do you study PD? Do you know anything more about the underlying mechanism? Can you tell me about monoamine oxidase? L-dopa? Neuro/immunophillins? Do you know if oxygen radicals play a role? Role of glia (astrocytes versus microglia)? [I've been trying to read up on this neuro stuff].

I'll be back Friday/Sat. Thank you so much.

Courtney
