It is a crime against humanity to execute anybody for financial misdealing. This is not a defense of financial misdealing. It is a repudiation of capital punishment for less than capital offenses.

Capital punishment is a controversial issue. Many advanced countries have outlawed it entirely, and many states in the US have also outlawed it entirely. Many religions consider it to be a mortal sin. Catholics, for example, take the rational position of opposing both capital punishment and abortion (as do Buddhists).

The consensus among those who have not outlawed it is that it is acceptable as a deterrent from the commission of even more abhorrent crimes, strictly limited to premeditated murder with particularly vile circumstances, e.g., murder of children, murder for financial gain, serial killers, and so forth.

Execution for crimes against the power of the state is a crime against humanity.
