I've copied and pasted articles that had their own embedded photo, and SI's new editor embedded the link, so that hte picture showed up in my post.

The actual picture didn't get uploaded to SI, if the site the picture is on took it down, it would disappear from the post, if they changed it (keeping its name and location the same) it would change in the post. The post just has a link that embeds the image in to your post, not a copy of the picture.
