Robert, I tend to agree with your analysis. However...

I am finding it difficult to explain WDC's sudden decision to dramatically accelerate their MR program. Perhaps the price/performance difference between TFI and MR has narrowed more quickly than expected due to the high volume of drives being sold.

Also, are you sure APM is shipping MR heads "in quantity"? I have read their October 10-Q and it suggests they are running a pilot at Goleta now. They explicitly stated Goleta MR rampup as a business risk. Their other new MR facility finished construction in October and will not be equipped until next April. This means a pilot and rampup there as well.

With IBM's recent announcement of what appears to be MR's replacement (in line with product life cycles in this industry), APM seems to be a VERY risky investment to me. IBM expects to begin delivery of the next generation at the same time APM is beginning a pilot to produce this generation.

hmmm, think I just talked myself out of buying APM tomorrow. As for RDRT, didn't need to do nearly as much research to make the same decision.
