If Humphrey had not stolen the primary from Mcarthy we would have elected Macarthy.

You had to have been there, but Carter was a buzz-kill of a president. In retrospect, many of his policies and positions seem prescient, but the fact was, he just wasn't able to get anyone to FOLLOW him. Rendering all his great ideas null and void.

Then, there was the Iran hostage situation, which made him, and the entire US look helplessly incompetent.
