President of the lie

"I hate to disrespect the president, but he's lying."

That was TV commentator Dick Morris last night on Fox's "Hannity," talking about Barack Obama's primetime speech in which the president once again warned Americans their government was on the verge of catastrophic default.

"This is total fear tactics, and it's a lie – a big lie!" added Morris. (I recently wrote a column explaining the "big lie" of Aug. 2 default in a way any 8-year-old can understand.)

Too often people throw the words "lie" or "liar" around too easily. Often someone just is wrong, or has a different opinion, which doesn't mean they are lying. I've been known to call people on the "liar" accusation from time to time, and many other times I don't but I consider it a weakness in the post.

But here it probably applies, and if it doesn't, if Obama really thinks default will result, then either he doesn't understand anything about US revenue and interest spending (which would be shockingly ignorant in a president), or he figures there would be default because he has decided that if its not passed he will choose to default (which would be shockingly foolish).

So he would have to be ignorant, or a liar, or a fool (or perhaps some combination).

And we have evidence that it is indeed a lie (not an example of ignorance or a foolish plan), because Obama himself has been telling banks and others that default will not happen, while telling the general public that it is a real risk.
