I do long for a time and place where honor and loyalty meant something.

A really extraordinary movie on TCM last night part of their "Arab Images in Film" night. A cheesy 50's melodrama with not-so-cliche insight into Bedouin life. A British officer falls in love with and marries a Bedouin woman.

It does provide some provocative insight. The tribal rituals are shown to be the human result of coping with a difficult environment. He is ultimately willing to give up all his family possessions (but not his honor) for her.

"How much is your wealth worth if you have no one to share it with?", to paraphrase JC's famous teaching.

Contrast that with a 1999 movie they showed where Iraqi's are referred to as "Dune coons" (and worse). How much is our tribe worth?
