We were going to hike into our son's elk camp (5 miles in) but he tried going in a couple of weeks ago and it is impassible because of the snow. I took a drive in the mts yesterday and there is still tons of snow up there.

That's good information. Thanks! I'll be needing to go up to Salmon Mountain in three weeks.

My Pard opened the lookout ten days ago, but he had to hike from Observation Point, which is about two miles from the trail head. The east end of the road is in pretty good shape as far as I've been because they paved it with stimulus money. No, actually they ran a machine over it to break up and pulverize the boulders that were making it such a hard ride.

There are a couple of washouts which haven't been fully repaired, though you can drive through them.
