PSINet Bolsters Web Shared Hosting Platform to Enhance Service Levels

PR Newswire - November 17, 1997 16:34

World's Premier Business ISP Becomes the First to Offer
100% Uptime Guarantee for PSIWeb Shared Hosting

HERNDON, Va., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- PSINet Inc. (Nasdaq: PSIX) today
announced the industry's first 100 percent (100%) uptime guarantee for its Web
Hosting Services offered through PSIWeb Inc. Using a distributed services
architecture, PSINet is able to offer the most comprehensive shared hosting
service level guarantee available today.
The PSIWeb Hosting Service is guaranteed to be 100 % available twenty-four
hours a day, everyday. If a Web site outage occurs at any time due to a cause
by the Web Hosting Service or by PSIWeb, the customer will receive a one-time
quarterly credit equal to ten percent (10%) of the Web Hosting minimum
quarterly fee. The unique design of PSINet's international Internet-optimized
network combined with the distributed PSIWeb platform, provides the
architecture upon which this industry-leading service guarantee is based.
PSINet began using the new architecture nearly two months ago with over 100
customers currently taking advantage of the benefits.
"Our Web customers are demanding more reliable and stable services upon
which they can base their business," said Michael Mael, vice president of Web
Services and Electronic Commerce for PSINet. "They need to focus on
developing their business models and managing growth, not worrying whether
their Web site is going to function properly. To meet these needs, PSINet has
aggressively built the industry's most robust Web platform incorporating
industry leading components that complement our international
backbone."
PSINet has teamed with F5 Labs to provide comprehensive load-balancing
technologies that are an integral part of the turnkey solution. "F5 Labs'
partnership with PSINet establishes a unified commitment to guaranteed content
availability for industry-leading small, medium, and large businesses
worldwide," said Steve Goldman, vice president of sales for F5 Labs. "We are
pleased to be part of PSINet's web technology architecture and its leadership
role in providing 100% up-time, the primary objective of both companies,"
Goldman added.
Substantial growth in global Web services is expected among all sizes of
businesses driven by unique applications such as multimedia and electronic
commerce. According to Kathryn Hale, principal analyst at Dataquest, the U.S.
Web hosting market was $283 million in 1996, is forecast to generate $633
million in 1997, and projected to surpass $2.6 billion in 2001. To realize
this aggressive growth curve and protect market share, providers must focus
attention on customer demands, which include greater flexibility and
accountability for downtime.

Interview with the Vampire's Webmaster
Anne Rice, one of the most popular authors on television, on the shelves,
and on the Web, is a best-selling novelist whose Vampire Chronicles and other
works are available in bookstores around the world. The combination of a
content-rich environment and visually stunning design has made Anne Rice's web
site a must-visit for thousands of fans every day. "The Official Anne Rice Web
Site" (www.annerice.com ), was designed and is maintained by Corbitt Design,
Old Bridge, NJ, and hosted by PSIWeb Inc. Not only is the site packed with
world-wide exclusives on Anne's literary and business ventures, but it also
offers a variety of products like the "Visit with Anne Rice" video,
screensavers, desktops, the Vampire Lestat Collectors Doll and special edition
Cuvee Lestat Wines.
Pat Corbitt, CEO of Corbitt Design (www.corbitt.com), says that his
experiences with PSIWeb have consistently validated his choice of Web services
provider. "We depend on PSIWeb's reliability and performance for our clients'
Web sites, particularly for applications such as electronic commerce," Corbitt
said. "For example, Web sales for the Lestat Wines exceeded all other
traditional advertising. It's crucial that our sites be up and running around
the clock so people around the world can visit, find information, and buy
merchandise whenever they want."
Corbitt, whose firm designs computer-generated special effects and 3-D
animations largely for feature film, television, and multimedia, is also
pleased about the simplicity of PSIWeb's services. "We're producers and
designers and, although we're one of the really savvy computer design houses,
when it comes to our Web sites, we don't want to know what goes on under the
hood of the Web machine. Our Web service provider has to be invisible, doing
everything right, all the time. PSIWeb has eradicated our fears, answered our
questions--in plain English--and delivered consistent excellence. Hosting our
sites with PSIWeb enables us to concentrate on our clients, which allows our
clients to have meaningful, revenue-generating sites that perform beyond
expectations," Corbitt added.

Solid Foundation for Business Applications
With more and more types of data and business processes finding their way
to the World Wide Web, ISPs serve a variety of roles. They not only must
provide robust connectivity and service management, they also find business
customers looking for competitive business applications. This class of value-
added services includes Internet faxing, electronic commerce,
Intranet/extranet, roaming/remote access, and others. PSINet has been a
leader in development and delivery of these capabilities with offerings such
as InternetPaper, PSIWeb Worldpay, PSIWeb eCommerce, PSINet IntraNet,
InterMAN, and InterRamp. All of these services can integrate with PSIWeb
services and benefit from the reliability now being offered.
The PSIWeb 100% uptime guarantee is now available throughout the U.S. and
Canada, with International support scheduled for early 1998. PSIWeb Shared
Hosting is managed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is supported by
PSINet's network operations center (NOC) headquartered in Troy, NY. PSINet is
the only ISP able to deliver fully managed Hosting Services with this level of
reliability and performance due to its unique distributed and replicated
architecture.

Quote from Lycos ceo on CNBC this morning: "Those companies that do not focus on profitability will be left behind"
I'm afraid PSIX fits into this catagory, and will remain in the 5-6 range until the ceo creates some trust with wall street or turns his attention to frofitability, instead of borrowing money to dig himself out of a hole.

I have 1/4 left of my original investment and will probaly blow it out today as I bought ASND on Thursday at 23, and will probably double up on that.

Good luck to all those who are prepared to hang on for another year or 2
