Claude my 'core positions' are roughly between 5 and 10 percent of the portfolio, depending on the stock.

Never over 15% including traders.

Right now ORT is at roughly 8%.

Claude,

“Core position” is an overused largely useless chewing gum term but since you asked ...

I only buy a core position in a stock based on FA based on the intend to increase / reduce the cost of this core position using what little TA I know. My usual ratio is 25/75 to start with the intend to build the core to 75% as long as FA warrants it.

NPK, SLW, PMG (just to name a few) are a good examples. I have dicked around with these things for years while (slowly) reducing my core cost. Still playing around with a few shares if and when the opportunity arises for grocery money.

Well, there you have it. One opinion of millions of what a core position is all about. LOL

Core is what I am willing to hold through ups and downs.. traders of course I try to buy low and sell high to reduce cost base...

right now I am just under 70% cash.. about 95% of my equity holding is split between NPK and ORT.A.. so I am what I would call OVERWEIGHT both :O) since 2008 I have tried to keep positions to 5%... especially in yield accounts.. not working with NPK, ORT.A right now :O)

The 'core' portion of a position varies widely for me, often think in terms of one-third and two-thirds though ... or three quarters, core gets a higher slice the more i like it, usually as various uncertainties get resolved, but also the ability of the stock to range around, so that you're fairly sure you can get a reload for any shares you off, or a sale for what you add in excess of a holding size ... sometimes you have to hold so long to get the gains that your traders start to feel like core millstones, such is life, has a way of changing definitions on us, lol

I try not to use the term 'core' in the sense of 'position percentage of portfolio' because that would confuse matters, but some do ... in this sense i [almost] never let anything get beyond one-eighth of pf by cost basis, or one quarter by current value when something runs well ... have to really like something to let it go that high, most speckies top out at one-sixteenth by cost, that's about six per cent and even that is above average, it's not hard to keep their individual levels down because there are so many of them lol, for instance the Yukon plays probably add up to near a quarter of total pf but that's split between eight or ten tickers ... speaking of which, just noticed crg.to went off at 1.00 again today, forgot to have a bid in, kinda like the 1.01s ... haven't got enough quotes pages room for all these
