The SS surplus is the only program which kept us from a financial crisis the past 25 years. Without SS, the deficits would much larger.

you should read about 'the seen and the unseen'

econlib.org

in short, the economy would be much better, with more and higher paying jobs, if money wouldn't have been taken from it for some government purpose like SS. and while it can't be abolished now, we should work towards that end over the long term.

How can you tell people who have paid enormous amounts of money into the program for the past 25 years, they won't get their promised benefits?

you tell them that government has lied to them and made lofty commitments that they can't keep. you tell them that the 'enormous' amounts of money they've paid in is minuscule compared to the money that must be paid out.

like i said, we can't just abolish SS now. too many people have nothing else to sustain them. but we can means test and raise the retirement age, and over many years, work to abolish SS. and if we worked to cut government over all areas we will be much better off.
