If modest long term reductions in the rate of growth (which are not cuts, and likely would not effect any current retirees) are not made, then eventually we are going to have to make sudden harsh massive cuts.

Just allowing things to go along as they have been isn't an option. I'm not saying its a bad option, its not an option at all. We simply can't afford it, and we can't even inflate our way around it (which would be a bad option) because the payments are adjusted for inflation.
