Power generation has to be controlled, based on demand, whether it is wind or fossil fuels.

When there is low demand they don't let all the wind mills crank out energy even though they could. Just like we don't burn more gas than we need to supply demand. When there is high demand but no wind ... like on hot days we are SOL. Who ever invents a better way to store energy wins here. The biggest problem we have with wind (without storage) is transmission. We can produce enough wind through the great plains funnel system on windy days to power the country, if we could find a way to transmit it to the population centers economically. We can't, which is why Pickens's project failed...so far.
