For many carrying a gun keeps them more settled. They know they can't afford to go crazy.

Also many people at protests are not mobs whipped in to action (although that happens too), but people just trying to get their voices heard.

That having said, if I had a gun, and a CCP (or if one was not necessary at the protest site), I'd either not carry, or carry concealed. Otherwise its too likely someone is going to make a big deal about the weapon, and try to argue that your side is crazy or dangerous because its armed.

It might be different if it was a right to carry protest, then having the weapon visible might be the point, but in other context it can distract attention from the message your trying to convey.
