I've watched several old Donahue clips (I didn't watch it when the shows where first being broadcast).

I'd say he was (at least on economics, where the clips I've seen have focused) frequently wrong.

But he listened, and he engaged other viewpoints, and he brought on people like Milton Friedman and let them talk at length, so he wasn't all bad...

If Friedman was still alive (or if they where broadcasting when he was still active), I can't see Rachel Maddow, or Keith Oberman bringing on Friedman (although I'd love to see it, at least if they actually let him talk instead of shouting over him, or bringing on some other guest to shout over him, or cutting away for a commercial or some other bit)
