  • Utah 57.4%
  • Oregon 53.1%
  • Idaho 50.2%
  • Arizona 48.1%

I found that interesting. I had no clue that one out of four or five workers in a state could work for the government, outside of the DC area, that is.

This info would have been more useful had state and local workers been differentiated from federal workers. I checked on the state tax burden in the various states and added it to each entry. I assume that for those states with a lower tax burden the workers are mostly federal, either that or state salary levels are very low.

#10 Nebraska - Gov. Dave Heineman
    Public employees: 128,025 - % of all employees: 16.0 32nd

#9 New York - Gov. David Patterson
    Public employees: 1,296,806 - % of all employees: 16.3 9th

#8 Idaho - Gov. Butch Otter
    Public employees: 96,225 - % of all employees: 16.4 30th

#7 Kansas - Gov. Mark Parkinson
    Public employees: 201,660 - % of all employees: 16.5 24th

#6 West Virginia - Gov. Joe Manchin III
    Public employees: 114,169 - % of all employees: 16.7 20th

#5 North Dakota - Gov. John Hoeven
    Public employees: 49,454 - % of all employees: 16.8 12th

#4 Mississippi - Gov. Haley Barbour
    Public employees: 191,831 - % of all employees: 18.9 36th

#3 New Mexico - Gov. Bill Richardson
    Public employees: 148,882 - % of all employees: 19.9 16th

#2 Alaska - Gov. Sean Parnell
    Public employees: 60,067 - % of all employees: 20.8 1st

#1 Wyoming - Gov. David Freudenthal
    Public employees: 52,433 - % of all employees: 22.0 4th

Then I looked around and found an entirely different set of numbers here:

Lost interest before trying to explain the differences.
