New Yorkers, even when they are politicized and leftists, tend to retain a fairly strong realistic streak, like in "money talks, bullish*t walks"... I know West Side liberals who despised Giuliani, but voted for him, because he was credited for an improvement in the quality of life in the city and for the increase in the prices of real estate. The city has a "single party" political system, but often elects Republicans, including the current bland Mayor.
