lorne, organizers of campaigns and communities recognize that there are essentially two types of power: Money power and people power. When there are issues which attract people a third type of power comes into play - the media which covers conflict.

As more and more individuals feel dis-enfranchised and massed together into action they can demonstrate tremendous people power and over whelm the systems economically and socially with organized tactics.

However, those with wealth can purchase time on the airways, hire organizers to organize. The only problem is when the various forces come together and push each others emotional buttons. That is when both parties go over the cliff and everyone lose. The political conflict that we are hopefully concluding at this point regarding the debt limit may be saved from going over the Cliff if the Tea Party ratifies the settlement proposal arrived at between the parties. Even so, the next time the parties will probably get closer to or go over the cliff to the detriment of everyone and the US.

We must remember our population is growing, individuals need the education and skill sets for in a technology, connectivity age. Without satisfactory sustainable employment to take care of their families all hell can break lose.
