That's what I meant by "And/or that you have really, really dumb constituents," first of all, ignorant of the fact that their congressman has been given a pass so is not necessarily any more committed to the principle than a congressman who voted the other way and second, dumb in that they haven't the capacity or are perceived to not have the capacity for nuance to understand and appreciate an explanation of why the congressman voted for raising the debt ceiling. If their constituents weren't dumb, there would be no risk.

One of the common perspectives from the left is that the rank and file on the right are too stupid to understand their own best interests (otherwise they would side with the D's who are for the little guys) and that they are under the thrall of a party that 1) does not represent their best interests and 2) mocks them in its populism. Giving congressmen a pass in situations like this feeds that perspective.
