"What were we doing this for again? There doesn't really seem to be much point to it. "

Maurice, I must disagree with you. The Islamic militants KNOW why they are doing this. They are attempting to re-establish the old Caliphate because they believe this is the only way that Allah will "bless them".

Religious fervor, and especially religious fanaticism, are not rational, IMO. It's not so much about the "here and now", it's about winning rewards in the hereafter. And to them, there is ALWAYS a point in achieving such rewards, even if it means suffering and death during their lives.

The "War on Terror" has always been about the civil war within Islam between moderate secularists, and the religious fundamentalists. Since we support the secularists, to include secular dictators, we're also a target.

But we're also a target because we support the existence of Israel. And the existence of that state within the Dar Al-Islam (house of Islam) is an affront to the Religious extremists who believe that once territory has been conquered by Islam, it cannot be surrendered. And, of course, for Arab dictators, inciting rancor against Israel deflects attention from their own corruption.

The only way to stop this is to given moderate Muslims the hope that they can defend against fundamentalism, while also showing them the benefits of a democratic process that is accountable to the citizens of that nation and provide for their needs as a people.

Of course, democracy is not guarantee of peace. People have the right to make bad choices (Hitler, Chavez.. etc), but they should always have the right to change their minds in future elections and vote someone else into power.
