<A> Westel Selects Cisco Networking Solutions to Expand Offerings to Customers; Cisco Solutions Provide Westel with Wide Range of Internetworking Capabilities

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) today announced that Westel Telecommunications Ltd., a leading telecommunications provider in British Columbia, has implemented an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) backbone consisting of Cisco BPX(R) ATM switches and AXIS shelves throughout British Columbia.

"Customer demand for greater bandwidth and advanced multimedia services is simply booming," says Wayne Sumarah, vice president of marketing for Westel. "The deployment of ATM technology, and the choice of Cisco's industry-leading solutions, will allow our customers to enjoy the benefits of enhanced data networking."

Westel will now be able to bring new networking services to market quickly with the assistance of Cisco's JumpStart(TM) consulting program. This program provides market research, strategy development, training and delivery vehicles to help service providers successfully implement new services. Westel currently provides Frame Relay services to its customers utilizing the new backbone, and plans to offer a range of new services such as Frame Relay-to-ATM service internetworking, T1 ATM services, broadband ATM services and high-speed/scalable Internet access.

The Cisco BPX is a standards-based ATM switch that allows broadband connectivity to deploy multimedia and voice/data applications across the network. The AXIS shelf, when attached to the BPX switch, allows narrowband multiservice connectivity across the ATM network. With these services, Westel will be able to provide customers with end-to-end networking solutions with guaranteed quality of service.

"Westel's use of Cisco's BPX and AXIS products provides an excellent example of how telecommunications service providers can excel in the data communications market," said Joseph Golden, vice president of marketing for Cisco's Wide Area Network (WAN) business unit. "The BPX and AXIS are proven industry performers in the areas of reliability and scalability, and we're excited that Westel selected these products to provide new and enhanced services to its customers."
