NEWS: ALR [Gateway 2000] clusted servers with FC storage.

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 1997--Advanced Logic Research (ALR), a wholly owned subsidiary of Gateway 2000 (NYSE: GTW), Tuesday announced its plans to provide fault tolerant clustered servers based on its high performance, highly scalable ALR Revolution 6X6 enterprise servers.

Developed in response to customer requirements for continuous availability in 7x24 network environments, the Revolution 6X6 Cluster will provide a turn-key fault tolerant solution for mission-critical data and enterprise applications.

"ALR continues to drive Intel-architecture based servers into the enterprise and mission-critical data processing environments," said Gene Lu, president of ALR.

"By providing a fault tolerant server cluster solution with emerging Fibre Channel storage, our customers will be assured of uninterrupted access to their enterprise business applications while extending their investment in six-way servers."

Pre-configured as a single rackmount system, ALR's clustered server solution will include two Revolution 6X6 rack mount servers, each running up to six 200-MHz Intel Pentium Pro processors and a shared rack-mount RAID subsystem. In order to maximize I/O data-throughput, the ALR Revolution Cluster will support Fibre Channel or Ultra Wide SCSI data subsystems and will accommodate up to 216-GB of shared data storage. The Revolution 6X6 Cluster will be based on Microsoft's Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition's Cluster Server.

"Earlier this month, the patent pending ALR Revolution 6X6 (tower) achieved the industry's highest TPC-C throughput ever recorded by an Intel-based server," said Chris Norman, director of marketing for ALR.

"This TPC-C score proved that the ALR Revolution 6X6 is the best Intel-based server for transaction processing environments, the same environments in which clustered systems tend to be deployed."

The industry-leading TPC-C score was achieved using six Intel Pentium Pro processors with 1-MB cache, the highest performing Intel processor for transaction processing environments. The ALR Revolution Cluster will be available with either 512-KB or 1-MB cache per processor.

Standard system configuration for the ALR Revolution 6X6 Cluster will include two Revolution 6X6 servers, each powered by two Intel Pentium Pro processors, 128-MB ECC RAM, two Fast Ethernet controllers, an ALR ADAC PCI RAID controller, and a 4-GB UltraWide SCSI hard disk.

For additional availability, the ALR Revolution 6X6 Cluster will include redundant hot-swappable power supplies, redundant processor fans, a RAID subsystem with hot-swappable hard drives, an uninterruptible power supply, and four-port switch box. Redundant network interface configurations will also be available. In addition, the ALR data storage subsystem comprises of a Quick Hot-Swappable rack mount storage drawer, four 9-GB UltraWide SCSI hard disks, and cluster termination controllers.

To provide mission-critical server environments with additional fault tolerance and optimum data protection, ALR InforManager's integrated server management featuring ActiveCPR (Central Processor Recovery) processor protection safeguards a multiprocessor server from potential processor failures and software crashes. Out of spec conditions trigger the ActiveCPR processor fail-over and auto recovery system, giving network users a chance to log out before auto shutdown emergency procedures are implemented.

Available in the first quarter of 1998, the Revolution 6X6 Cluster will have a starting price of $44,000. Each server will include Microsoft's Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition with 25-client access licenses. Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition includes Microsoft Cluster Server, support for up to eight processors, 4-GB RAM tuning, Microsoft Message Queue Server, Microsoft Transaction Server and Microsoft Internet Information Server.
