>> Is it an improvement that liberals are hostile to people praying in public now, when they didn't used to be?<<

Your question assumes that liberals are hostile towards all forms of public prayer, which I don't see as being the case. For one thing, not all liberals agree about everything. I'm not especially bothered by prayer one way or another.

When I was a boy, living on Air Force bases, we were led in prayers in school each morning. My daughters are not led in prayer in school now. I do think that's an improvement, as these prayers would constitute an official endorsement of religion, which is barred by the First Amendment.

I am bristling. Stupid statement. Screw FDR. Let's dig him up so I can say so to to his corpse. Will that make you feel better?

And if the historical nature of things makes them "ok" do you want to go back to the historical language for blacks? In fact, would you like to dig up all the ancient slights we can find in American speeches. There are a lot of them. Our great and glorious dead politicians' club has insulted every ethnic group there is, at one time or another, as well as the disabled, those with mental issues, and just about anyone else who was "different".

Using your rationale, just because no one complained then, it should be okee dokee now. I hope you can see how silly that is as an argument.
