I can't imagine why they believe that. They believe all sorts of things that seem contrary to reality. Not all religious folks do that. There are plenty of religious liberals who don't want to us the machinery of the state to inflict their religious views on others. There are even some conservatives who think that. So it's possible to have an imaginary friend and NOT want to be a bully. But It does not seem to be possible on the far right. I don't know why that is. But it is what it is.
