Mid-80's Japanese were lecturing the US in low consumption. They suggested minimize the nr of credit cards an American individual would own.

The same consumption that enabled Japan to export its way out of poverty and acquired their foreign reserves.

The Chinese financial echelons were not reading the press while they were following the Japan route in the 80s.

Aw c'mon Hawk... corollary to that is that too many Americans are nothing but a bunch of junkies with no self control... is that what you think... That dog don't hunt... It's not like someone sailed over, put a gun to their head and sometimes pulled the trigger if they didn't buy stuff that they did not need... America needs to look in the mirror... The devil made me do it ??? naw... we make our own choices...

Now that did indeed happened to someone ... oh yeah to the Chinese :o)

PROMINENT AMERICAN DRUG DEALERS OF THE 19TH CENTURY

Another tidbit:
The British were well aware of the destructive nature of opium, but argued that opium sales were necessary because it was the only item which they could sell to the Chinese. Payment for tea, which the British imported, had created a drain of silver from England to China.

We all know what the west did to China when they tried to refuse the opium... good thing China isn't getting tough :O)
