Ten years ago the CBO estimated that the national debt would be something like $6 trillion in 2013(it is $14.5 trillion now). There is over $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities the government is on the hook for - not payable. To say the government has written a check that you can't cash would certainly understate the situation.
