Even though I don't buy a lot of the Hindu religion (though I love the stories) I like the concept of Maya, and of course in the Buddhist philosophy, you have the idea of the busy mind getting in its own way. I think when humans meet things they do not understand, or fear, the create "Maya" for lack of a better word, to shield themselves from fear, or from the unknown. It's probably very adaptive for primitive people, but I don't think it works that well for an advanced society. However it appears we are stuck with it for the time being.
