Former Rep. Tim Mahoney arrested for DUI By Rachel Rose Hartman \| The Ticket – 7 hrs ago tweet 13 Share Email Print The scandals continue for former Florida Democratic Rep. Tim Mahoney. Mahoney was arrested this weekend for driving under the influence after he was found intoxicated and sleeping behind the wheel. Around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Mahoney was released from the Palm Beach county jail. "I got arrested last night for a DUI, and that's regrettable," he confirmed to reporters and thanked law enforcement for doing an "outstanding job." A Palm Beach Gardens Police spokesman told WPTV police found Mahoney asleep in his car near the southwest corner of U.S. 1 and PGA Blvd. on the Palm Beach Garden city line. Mahoney said he hadn't yet had a chance to talk to his attorney but planned to plead innocent since he made "a conscious decision not to drive." WPTV reports that under Florida law, DUI charges can be filed for a non-moving car as long as the driver has physical control of the vehicle. The incident marks the latest scandal for Mahoney, as well as for his former district. Mahoney was first elected to Congress in 2006 to represent the Palm Beach area 16th District following Republican incumbent Mark Foley's resignation over sexually charged Internet communications with congressional pages. But when Mahoney's re-election race rolled around in 2008, news broke that Mahoney--who campaigned on an anti-corruption, family values platform-- had hired his mistress to his campaign, paid her $121,000 in hush money after firing her, and she was threatening to sue him. The then-married congressman denied the payment and breaking any laws but admitted to multiple extra-marital affairs, including with the mistress-turned-employee in question. He lost his re-election bid that November. Today, the district is represented by Republican Tom Rooney, an attorney and Army veteran, who belongs to the Rooney family that owns the Pittsburgh Steelers.
