Perhaps the late day sell off was raising cash to cover losses elsewhere. Like in Fall 2008, it could accelerate and eventually spread to the metals themselves.
But nothing ever happens in the summer. <g>

This evening, looking at Gold in Asia, I'm reminded of the rocket ride of silver at the end of April.
