Thanks thecow.

It was a big scare for me because, although I was very careful not to be taken in by the caller, when I looked at my PC, the Microsoft Essentials icon was RED i.e. OFF.I immediately switched off the PC which the caller confirmed I should do, and when I switched it back on the ME tray icon went red again. The caller asked me to start a routine which of course I refused to do but carefully tried to get some info on him. It didn't take much.

An internet search using my netbook and a internet dongle (I had the router switched off by then) told me more or less what I needed to know, the voice sounded the same, and he did seem a little shocked when he heard my voice.

I think now (tentatively) that windows was doing a big update and that ME switched off as part of that process. i.e it was just a coincidence he called at the same time. I am checking carefully but the windows site indicates some recent biggish updates to the software I use.

In fact Win XP (my other boot system) I am using now is also going through a big update that I am using the official site to do (34 MB)

Anyway, I have the guys phone number and address if I have any problems -g-
