Eventually Sioux killers, working for the US Cavalry. No, not rabble. Middle class? I don't know enough about the economy to say. Farms, houses, jobs, house carpenters, livery stables, the occasional trading post manager. They took care of what they had. No reason to destroy things that belong to you.
