They forget that we are a diverse nation with people having all sorts of views and that there needs to be accommodation necessitating a slower progress towards the ultimate goal. A big massive dose in any situation, even in the ER, kills the patient.

I think its the ethnic and racial diversity that has Rs most upset. Frankly, I have tried to see it from their POV......and I kind of understand from where they are coming. I saw Obama speak here in Seattle in 2004. A friend got me to go.....it was in a HS gym. Right then and there, I knew he should be our next president......it was more an instinctive reaction than something based on fact. Nonetheless, there was no question in my mind. And later googles about him would confirm my initial reaction. So it did not come as a surprise to me the reaction he got when he spoke to the Democratic National Convention in 2004. And it did not come as a surprise to me that he got nominated in 2008.

However, for those Americans.......for those white Americans, who had no clue about Obama until 2008, it must have come as a real shock that he was running for president. White Americans have spent decades fleeing people of color by running to the suburbs. Suddenly one was about to be president of the US. It must have come as a real shocker.

So then, Rs dislike him because he's a Dem but that dislike is intensified because he's not white. Hence, the derogatory racial terms and insults thrown his way. I still can't get over that Boehner did not return his phone calls. That suggests that Boehner and many Rs do not see Obama as president. I can't tell you how angry that makes me. And there isn't much Obama can do about it. Its infuriating.

In any case, the US is going through one of its most important tests. Can we accept that we are a diverse nation.....racially, ethnically, sexually, et al? Can we continue to move forward as we have in the past? Right today, I am not very confident. If this is the birth of a new nation.....one comfortable with its diversity, then the birthing pains are extreme.......and very ugly.
