Buehrle said there were even a few Illinois natives that they were able to talk to. The left-hander said it put things into perspective about complaining over a tired arm when these military members were dealing with far more serious injuries.

“One guy said he nearly blew his arm off and his hand was barely attached,” Buehrle said. “He said he picked his hand up and made sure to bring it with him because he said ‘I’m not leaving it there for anybody to have.’ ”

Buehrle said not everybody wanted to share their story and he respected that. Despite the tales of agony, Buehrle said he will make the visit to the hospital every time he visits Baltimore for however long he plays.
