Did it produce something valuable for society? No. Financialization of the economy put the rich countries in the quandary they are in.

They were not dinamiting mountains to take ore to ship to China to make stuff.

They were not planting food. Reforesting with pinus and eucaliptus to make pulp and paper. They were not bolting stuff together, insuring them, shipping and forwarding them.

They were not raising pigs, cows and chickens. Planting corn and soybeans to feed those livestock.
Planting and harvesting coffee. Smashing oranges for O.J.

They've got income without producing anything of value to society.

Should I have simpathy for their plight?

Was I not right to call for Great Unwinding by my war cry: Bring it on?

I mobilize lots of retro-excavators, trucks, rolls of fiber optic, container loads of electronic gear to light up the Optical Fiber inside the African bush.

My income money is safe. Very safe.
