Arun, the rioter's poverty is philosophical not material.

It is a gratuitous insult to poor people to expect them to be violent. Poor people are not violent. Violent people tend to be poor but they are poor because of their cognitive and philosophical deficits and violent tendencies, not the reverse. If poor people are poor because of being attacked, then of course they will be more likely to be violent. But it is not poverty itself which makes people violent.

When I was poor, I was not inclined to be violent or to steal. I worked day and night, saved money like crazy and got out of it. Saving money means not spending it. That means living in the cheapest possible way. That does not mean eating McDonalds instead of Michelin 2 star. It means eating boiled barley instead of luxuries like rice and wheat. It means buying a second hand Lada and repairing it yourself, instead of a new BMW, Audi or Mercedes.

Plenty of people are poor and are disinclined to be violent thieves.

Now that I am well off, I'm far more likely to indulge in political revolution and am doing so. I can afford it, don't have to support a family and have the time to do what I like unlike when I had to show up to work each day and ensure I didn't offend my employers or their customers. Many of the Islamic Jihadists are in a similar position. Osama bin Laden was not poor.
