re NEU - I like the lubricant business. It has some nice long term growth, good margins, somewhat but n ot extremely economy sensitive (the wheels needs to be greased even if they are turning less) and a few companies owning the market.

good point. I looked at the trends through the 2008 collapse and earnings and returns held up decently. a little sag, but not as much as I might've expected. It actually compares favorably to Lubrizol in many respects imho.

My history with Basic Materials type companies is not good - I've shied away from cyclicals to a large degree because other people see the cycles turning before I do and many of them have deep swings, but alot of those are on my list right now. I almost added CLF today also but in the spirit of things forced myself to slow down and spread out my buys over time.

Others near the top of the watchlist in basic materials are CF, VALE, RIO, BBL. Unfortunately beyond ADR I don't know much about the international opportunities.

re lubricants - I did add to grease stock 5018.T Moresco Oil research on the drop after I posted first LOL - my average cost is around 750Yen. They reiterated their forecast of 117YenY2012 and will pay 25yen dividend (maybe a little more even). This is one of my larger positions in my portfolio and the largest Japanese position.

They have shown good LT growth and in recent years their earnings have exploded. The stock price still does not seem to care much.
