Yes, you have to run the same kind of memory, and normally you have to run the same size memory boards. Sometimes you can mix 8's with 16's, often not. You need to 1)look at the system board to see how many memory sockets you have and 2) RTFM to see how you are allowed to "mix and match". In a lot of systems, you have to "pair" memory boards - if you want 16 you have to put in 2 8's, etc.

It will definitely allow you to run more browser windows. If you don't have to pair and can have 3 boards, go for 48mb. Memory is the best money you can spend in your system, followed immediately by the monitor.
