Opportunism is easy, exploiting a situation that exists. We all evolved to exploit niches, but most of us are not burglars, vandals, or thieves. Whether due to morals or fear of reprisal, depends on the individual. We all evolved to avoid social unrest and will put up with a lot, but if enough individuals think they are being exploited, then they will revolt, and if the tipping point is reached, there is a revolution. If you study the history of revolutions (I have) -- the people are mad for a long long time before they finally boil over. Thus, the power of demonstrations. A rally is not a riot. Living in Washington, DC, I observe rallies and demonstrations pretty much every week. People come here to march around and carry signs and make speeches, and then go home. Left, right, far left, far right, anarchist, gay, anti-gay, anti-war, pro-war, this, that and the other thing. DC cops and park police have it down to a routine. Put up the barricades around the World Bank and the IMF when the anarchists come to town. Put barricades along Pennsylvania Avenue when there is going to be a march to the White House or Constitution Avenue when there is going to be a march to the Capitol. Etc. A lot of my clients are DC metro cops and Capitol Police. Some of the most laid back, easy going people I have ever met. There are places in the world, of course, where peaceful demonstrations are met with riot police and water cannons and even tanks. Not here. The people have the right to free speech, and peaceful assembly, and to petition the government for redress of grievances. And when the people get mad as hell, they run for elected office. See, e.g., Tea Party. I get a big kick out of how much the Tea Party pisses off Nancy Pelosi and the New York Times, and the rest of the liberal establishment. "The barbarians are at the gates!" "How DARE they???!!!"
