Koan, that Vanity Fair piece was out of this world.. Who knew? My only comment for now is that I don't know this author and if there was a hidden agenda. I visited the Rhine Valley for the first time in 2006 during the soccer World Cup....my bf at the time was a soccer and German-phile, for lack of a better word. Liberal as heck but had made some dear German friends over the years and loves their culture, language, people.......similar to my love for Spain and its peoples... A country I'd never have chosen to visit and I had a delightful time...was sad to leave. It was then that I learned that Germans were raising their flag for the first time, en masse, since Hitler.......that they were quite ashamed of their history....I met wonderful Germans everywhere we went....intelligent, respectful, hard-working, English speaking(for the most part) and light-hearted and fun...it was the summer........Berlin was becoming a hot area for artists from different countries to live and work...Who knew? I met American artists at cafes who enjoyed Berlin more than they enjoyed Paris. We didn't make it up there... Yet, I'd never heard the bf talking about the scatological thing.... There's much in there that will take at least a second read and time for reflection.....thanks for drawing my attention to read it since it appeared too long and drawn out when I first saw it posted...
