Back then, not hardly.

My son had the same opportunity, having done his M.Sc.EE in Munich, while the jobs were tight a few years ago, he was offered a Ph.D. opportunity but declined it. His argument: some of the other guys on his course were just eons ahead of him in sciences while not very good at selling themselves...
He got a job at a BMW subcontractor and eventually was grabbed by BMW to head their logistics planning of micro controller systems for future models.
