Complete drivel. Nobody makes them buy Big Macs and mobile Cyberspace DeVices < What you say is very true. Westerners have delivered poverty around the globe by judging primitive people's lifestyles to be wanting and trying to change it. Of course I try to change primitive lifestyles. If I can sell them CDMA/OFDM and Zenbu, I make profits and they get the benefits of mobile Cyberspace. If I can get them to adopt Tradable Citizenship, their lives and mine will be better. You have probably also improved your life over the decades by "wallowing" in the multitude of improvements offered to you. I didn't force TJ to buy CDMA - he volunteered and handed over his hard-earned cash [or ill-gotten loot, depending on your point of view]. Thanks TJ. Much obliged. I can use that cash to buy things Made in China. I'm sure the happy natives of China enjoyed their Maoistic mantras, hutongs and open sewer toilets better than being dad, but "once very happy" doesn't really describe that way of life. Countries may not want a big GDP growth. They need to be wealth enough to provide a good life for their population (J.K. Galbraith, who defended that, was vindictaed). Thus they do not invest much but pay for welfare for their population. See the growth of Servcies sector % of the GDP. Increasing the number of doctors and nurses and investment in nursing homes (growth was huge!) does not contribute to productivity. But population liked that and voted for the politicians that provided that. In America, they forgot to tell government to cut defense budget to offset those new expenses. Right again! People who can't afford bicycle want to jet set. Being at a earlier stage of economic development this generation of poor people cannot afford the goodies a developed country does. Simply: they have too much people in the agriculture sector. Low productivity means they are not generating any surplus. Only freeing these farm hands. Moving to city and engaging in industrial production they can hike their productivity and get wealthier. No wonder many decide to invest in higher education and immigrate to rich countries. They can jump a few steps in their way to wealth!!! Those who migrate and were luck to get employment may ended up having sibilings that cannot get the jobs their migrant fathers got.
