Far more likely, Google will just continue Motorola's mediocre also-ran status in the handset business, thus adding a big, crappy commodity hardware business to its glorious monopoly software business in search. And that won't make investors happy.

I doubt that, seriously. Google has proven themselves to be an aggressive company, if not an innovative one; their innovations being more along the lines of business strategy rather than products.

They could spin off the hardware portion of the company in order to recoup some of the costs.

The patent portfolio is more of a barricade than anything. Now, they are scrambling to find issues where they can accuse Apple of infringement, the intent being to force a settlement and end the war with their Android momentum still intact.
